Gyeongju is an open-air museum of the Silla kingdom — but it's also quietly delicious. The food here leans traditional and a little ceremonial, fitting for an old royal capital: famous red-bean sweets sold as souvenirs, lavish set meals built for sharing, and a heritage rice wine from its historic Gyodong quarter.
Most of it is clustered right where the tourists are, near the great tomb park, so it's easy to eat well between the sights. Here's what to try.
Gyeongju's food sits close to the sights: Hwangnam-dong and the lanes around Daereungwon tomb park for sweets and ssambap, and the traditional Gyodong village for beopju rice wine and old-style dishes.
The Gyeongju must-eats
Gyeongju's most famous souvenir: a thin, soft pastry packed almost entirely with sweet red-bean paste, stamped with a chrysanthemum pattern. It has been made in the city since 1939 and is still baked fresh in huge quantities by the tomb park.
The other Gyeongju sweet: a chewy little cake of glutinous barley filled with red bean, lighter and less sweet than hwangnam-ppang. A more recent local invention that's become a city staple.
A generous Gyeongju set meal: a big spread of fresh leaves, rice, grilled or braised meat and dozens of little side dishes, which you wrap and eat by hand. It turns a simple meal into a colourful feast.
A refined traditional rice wine with deep roots in Gyeongju's old Gyodong neighbourhood, historically tied to the Choe family and recognised as part of Korea's intangible heritage. Smoother and more delicate than everyday makgeolli.
Make a food trip of it
Gyeongju is easy to graze between the sights: a box of warm hwangnam-ppang by the tombs, a colourful ssambap feast for lunch, and a glass of Gyodong beopju to finish. History and food in the same few walkable blocks.
